Education

Argentina: Education

Education from pre-school to university level is available free of charge. Education is officially compulsory for all children at primary level, between the ages of six and 14 years. Secondary education lasts for between five and seven years, depending on the type of course: the normal certificate of education (bachillerato) course lasts for five years, whereas a course leading to a technical or agricultural bachillerato lasts for six years. Technical education is supervised by the Consejo Nacional de Educación Técnica. In 1999 enrolment at primary schools included an estimated 99.3% of pupils in the relevant age-group. In 2003 enrolment at secondary schools included 79.1% of pupils in the relevant age-group. Non-university higher education, usually leading to a teaching qualification, is for three or four years, while university courses last for four years or more. There were 36 state universities and 48 private universities in 2001. Central government expenditure on education and culture in 2008 was forecast at 10,189.8m. new pesos (6.3% of total expenditure).
